A Detailed Introduction to PMI PMBOK® Guide

About the Course

A project is defined as a temporary set of activities producing a unique product.  Managing these activities requires knowledge and skills that would lead to accomplishing the project goals.  This is called as Project Management, which includes performing specific activities under:

  • Initiating
  • Planning
  • Executing
  • Monitoring and Controlling, and
  • Closing

The Project Management Institute (PMI®) provides the global standard in project management through its standard – A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, 2008.  It defines the best practices that projects may follow in successfully managing projects.  Even as the guide proclaims itself to be a foundational reference, the book is still quite complex in its presentation of the subject content. This makes understanding of the project management standard quite a hard task for even practicing project managers.  Consider the following hard facts extracted from the guide itself:

  • 5 Process Groups
  • 9 Knowledge Areas
  • 42 Processes
  • 209 occurrences*of Inputs
  • 182 occurrences of Tools & Techniques and
  • 141 occurrences of Outputs

A standards guide, by definition is just a reference and not a text book.  This adds to the difficulties in appreciating the standard.  This is equivalent to saying that just by reading an English dictionary one can hope to speak, read, write and learn the English language!

To mitigate these difficulties, we present a single case study by walking through one of the common examples in everyone’s lives – that of building their own dream home.  This is an example closer to most people’s hearts, combined with the fact that the example also belongs to one of the world’s oldest industry.

We explore in depth on all the 42 processes, including the inputs, outputs, tools and techniques, with an abundance of pictures and side notes to keep the flow going.

In our many sessions training project managers for the PMP certification, one common theme that appeared was a lack of a consistent way for the students to recollect, collate, understand, remember the humongous amount of information that the PMBOK guide provides. 

This is a humble attempt at weaving a story around two characters, a husband and wife, managing the house construction project using a majority of the concepts outlined in the PMBOK guide.
